A Surprise in Store

‘Ralph, Julie. It’s good to see you again. I take it you enjoyed your time in Ireland – or not, as the case may be. Get them some drinks, Marco; they look like they need them. It’s good to see you both.’ Carlos welcomed Ralph with the usual Italian style of a hug and a kiss on both cheeks. Julie just got a kiss.

‘Don’t ask about Ireland; it’s a long, sorry story. Another time.’ Looking around the hotel suite, Ralph was surprised that Carlos was alone with only Marco at his side. Usually his hotel suite was filled with other suits discussing business. ‘Where is everyone, Carlos?’ Ralph’s brow creased. This kind of thing, with no witnesses, was usually a bad sign.

‘Ralph, I know what you’re thinking, but I just wanted to speak to you and Julie alone. We have our own business to attend to. Apart from the heist, I want to do an inner jewel pick-up.’

Turning to look at each other, Julie and Ralph were speechless. ‘You want to do another robbery while we’re also doing one?’ Amazed at Carlos’s revelation, Ralph stared open-mouthed and, with a nudge from Julie, took a drink.

‘I love surprising you; you always make me laugh. Of course. We get a cut of the robbery and we both get a major cut from the inside one. This includes you, of course, Julie.’ Carlos’s Italian charm floated around the room. Everyone was intrigued, even Marco.

‘Why do you want to do that?’ Ralph’s disbelief came pouring out in a scramble. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

‘I have it all planned and your back is already covered, Julie. You see, everyone at that meeting will think it’s you on top of that helipad, but it won’t be. I said you were the master of disguise and you’re going to prove it.’ Carlos’s enthusiasm at his new idea became infectious and they all sat forward on the sofa, waiting for the next stage of his plan.

Julie was about to butt in but Carlos raised his hand to stop her. ‘Let me finish first. I can see you’re all dying to hear this.’ Carlos chuckled to himself like a young schoolboy with a secret, the excitement bubbling up inside of him like a champagne bottle about to burst its cork. The surprised look on Marco’s face was enough to tell Ralph he had no idea about this new plan of Carlos’s either.

The moment Carlos got an idea into his head, he put all his plans into action without telling anyone they would be a part of it until afterwards. He just presumed everyone would agree to his plans. ‘A famous auctioneers, whom we all know, are having an auction. Not just any auction, but an exclusive one indeed. They are auctioning off the engagement ring of the Arab prince’s mother. It is enormous, a hundred-carat flawless diamond worth between eleven and thirty million pounds.’ Carlos paused, waiting for the information to sink in, watching their eyes widen with amazement.
